Table of Contents
Overview
CiteRight will apply a citation format based on the available information from the source you saved it from by default. However, you can always modify how that reference appears throughout your document after it is saved. In this article, you'll learn how you can modify various pieces of your reference.
Click Modify in the case preview pane to change how a reference appears in your document
1. In your Microsoft Word document, select the reference you want to modify. Click the Modify button in the preview pane.
2. Another side panel will appear and allow you to change the appearance of the citation, the short form, and/or the pinpoint type. Once you have edited the item, select Save.
Your changes will automatically be applied throughout your document. You can always revert your changes to their original appearance by selecting the Revert button in the Modify panel.
Please note that any changes to the hyperlink will not direct the user to the specific paragraph in the web version of that case.
Any changes that are made in the body of the document or within the field of the footnote will revert when the reference refreshes. Instead, always make changes using the "modify" as detailed above.
Changing a source hyperlink
- Select the case for which you would like to change the hyperlink. Once you click the case, the preview pane will open and display the case text
- In the preview pane, click the Modify button
- Find the source hyperlink field. It will be populated with the default source hyperlink. Remove and/or replace with the new hyperlink. Click Save.
Modifying short forms
Steps
- Select a citation to open the case text in the preview pane.
- Under the style of cause, select Modify.
- In the Short Form section of the Details panel, enter the desired short form, then click Save.
- Citing a case for the first time will not display the short form. The short form will automatically be displayed the next time you cite that case anywhere in your document.
- Cite the case again to show the short form in square brackets.
In this example: Hernandez is the short form.
Suppressing short form display in the first reference
- In MS Word, click on the CiteRight tab, then click Preferences
- In the Citations tab, uncheck Include short form in first citation, then click Save.
Now, when rendering citations, the short form in square brackets in the first citation will not appear.
Keep in mind that if you make subsequent references to the case throughout your document, the short form will still appear, as long as the Short Form checkbox in the Formats section of the Citation Preferences is selected.
