Overview
CiteRight can automatically hyperlink to your sources for all references in your document. By default, a link to the website where the case was retrieved will be saved along with the case text. This article will cover how to insert hyperlinks into your references.
Including hyperlinks to the web source in your references
- Go to the CiteRight tab in the Microsoft Word Ribbon.
- Click on "Preferences."
- Click on "Preferences."
- Select the Citations tab.
- Find the Source Links section.
- Click the checkboxes to indicate where you would like the hyperlink to be embedded or placed.
Placing the hyperlink in the style of cause
This will embed the link to the website where you downloaded the case as part of the style of cause. To access the link itself, press ctrl + click on the style of cause.
Beals v. Saldanha, 2003 SCC 72
Note: If you had modified the citation at all (changed the hyperlink, short form, pinpoint type, or modified the full citation), you will not be able to hyperlink to the style of cause separately from the primary citation. Make sure to select both "Style of cause" and "Primary citation" to keep the hyperlinks intact.
Placing the link as part of the primary citation
Just like placing the link in the style of cause, checking the primary citation box embeds the hyperlink as part of the primary citation.
Beals v. Saldanha, 2003 SCC 72
Note: If you had modified the citation at all (changed the hyperlink, short form, pinpoint type, or modified the full citation), you will not be able to hyperlink to the primary citation separately from the style of cause. Make sure to select both "Style of cause" and "Primary citation" to keep the hyperlinks intact.
Placing the hyperlink at the end of the reference
Checking this option places the hyperlink at the end of the reference and encloses it in angle brackets.
Beals v. Saldanha, 2003 SCC 72 <http://canlii.ca/t/1g7bw>
If you included a pinpoint in any of your citations, the hyperlink will direct you to the first paragraph you cited in that reference.
Example:
Beals v. Saldanha, 2003 SCC 72 at paras 3-7
The system will direct you to paragraph 3 of the web version of that case.
Placing the hyperlink in the Table of Authorities
If you click "Insert TOA", you will see a Table of Authorities inserted as a plaintext table in your document. The TOA is automatically hyperlinked by default. If you deselect this option in your Preferences, then you can reinsert a new copy of the TOA and see the change reflected.
