Overview
When preparing a book of authorities, some courts may require you to combine your PDF of the BOA and your document into one. CiteRight allows you to create a cross-linked BOA to provide a link between your document and your BOA. In this article, we'll learn how to combine a PDF of your BOA and a PDF of your document into a single PDF file.
It's important to note that cross-linked documents have a target document and a reference document In the case of a cross-linked BOA, the BOA is the target document and the factum/memo document is the reference document. This means that the order of how you add them together will be very important. In order to do this successfully, please follow the below steps.
- Save the reference document as a PDF/E document to embed all fonts and styles of your document to the PDF - Most PDF editors such as Adobe PDF Pro, Nuance Power PDF allow you to embed the styles, fonts, and customizations of a PDF into the actual memory of the document. This means that unrecognized styles or fonts will appear as they should when combined. In most cases going to the File menu and looking for an Export or Save as Other option as PDF/E option will allow you to do this. Combining the files without this step creates an unreadable format (in most instances).
- Combine the newly converted reference document file into the Book of Authorities - As indicated above, this step is crucial. Trying to combine the BOA into the PDF/E file will break the linkages between the documents. However, when you combine the PDF/E into the BOA, you'll observe that the linkages work internally.
