Overview
In CiteRight, there are many aspects of the PDF that can be customized. While the button says Generate BOA, you can think of this feature as a general PDF generator.
You can configure the Name, Appearance, Document, and Index Page. This article will explain how to customize your PDF, and what configuration options are available.
Customizing the PDF, or Book of Authorities
1. Select Preferences from the CiteRight ribbon
2. Select the Book of Authorities tab. Here, you will see the available fields, dropdown menus, and checkboxes to customize your BoA.
3. After you select your preferred settings, click Save.
Note that you will still have to generate your BOA, as saving the preferences does not automatically generate one. To learn how to do so click here.
Adding Pinpoint links to your BOA
To generate the Pinpoint column in your BOA's Index Page, simply turn on the setting at the bottom of the Preferences menu. To generate the red box at each case's front page, turn on "Include pinpoints on source front page". Both of these settings are highlighted below:
Full Overview of Configuration Options
Name
Long name
The long name will be listed as the first indication of the BOA name and will be located in the first reference of your document.
Short name
The short name, in contrast, will be listed to indicate the BOA in all subsequent references of your document.
File Name
The file name is the indication of the name of the cross-linked file when the Hyperlink to BOA option is selected in the Document preferences.
Appearance
Order of Appearance
This option allows a user to select the order by which the tabs of the BOA will be organized. Currently, we offer 3 options: Alphabetically, by Order of Appearance, and Chronologically.
When the option to sort the references alphabetically is selected, the references in your BOA will be organized alphabetically but will not affect how you have cited them in your document or how they are listed in the List Citations feature. The order of appearance is as it is. Your references in the BOA will be organized by the order of how they appear in your document. Lastly, listing your items chronologically will sort them by the year of the reporter.
Font Size
We offer three sizes for the font in your BOA: Small, medium, or large. Please note that this also has no effect on how your font is represented in your document or how the tab markers are represented in your document. This only changes the font in your BOA.
Pinpoint Selections
This feature allows you to choose how to draw attention to specific areas of your case when included in the BOA. Currently, you can sidebar (represented by a black line on both sides of the margin) and highlight (represented by a yellow highlight block over the pinpoint).
We also provide an option to include the pinpoints you've called out in your case on the first page of that reference.
Clicking on the pinpoints in the red box will take you to the area of that case where the pinpoint is located.
Document
Overview
The tab markers are a way to indicate where the references in your document appear in the corresponding book of authorities.
Format
In this section, we offer the options to customize the tab markers that are included in the references of your document once the BOA is generated. In the drop-down menu, we provide options to choose how you want the tab numbers displayed in your document references. You can choose to list the name in various ways or to leave the name out entirely.
Also, we provide further customizations for what format your tab markers can be set to. Currently, we offer an option to bold, italicize, or underline your tab markers.
Cross-linking and Combining
Lastly, we offer the ability to cross-link a BOA with your document or have a combined Factum and BOA. These options turn the tab markers in your document into hyperlinks to the specific areas in your BOA that the reference points to. They can be two separate cross-linked PDFs or one combined PDF.
Index Page
Simply put, the pinpoints of the references will also appear in your BOA index page in addition to the reference names.
