Overview
CiteRight allows you to create custom references within the Microsoft Word Add-In. All Ibids and Supras will be automatically tracked and a placeholder page in your Book of Authorities will be added, once generated. On top of that, you can reuse your custom references as they remain in whichever collection they were created in. Some examples of references for which you may want to create a custom reference are:
- Evidence
- Transcripts
- Books or publications
- Old cases that are not available online
- American/UK case law
- Legislation other than from CanLII
Creating a custom reference
1. While viewing a collection, Click Create Custom Citation at the bottom.
2. Input the full citation, short-form, hyperlink, and select the type of pinpoint. Then, click Save and your custom citation will be saved in your collection.
Note: Custom references can be searched in the same way as other references, using the search bar or by scrolling through the list.
Attaching a PDF to your source
After creating/saving your custom reference, the side panel will display it. Uploading a PDF is optional, but recommended as you can then have your PDF included in the Book of Authorities, as well as refer to it in the display.
Note: pinpointing through a PDF is not possible, but instead use the Edit menu to add your pinpoints manually.
Citing and modifying custom references
Citing and modifying a custom reference works just like with your cases. You can click the Cite button and update details using the Modify and Edit menus.
How does a custom citation appear in the Book of Authorities?
If you have uploaded a PDF to your custom citation, this will appear at the correct tab in your Book of Authoirites. If you have not uploaded a PDF, we will instead create a placeholder at this tab. On the second page of your BoA, you will find a page of "Additional Work Required," listing all documents that need to be inserted and pinpoints that need to be indicated. Note, the BoA Index will still list your custom reference and the BoA will contain its tab number page.
