Overview

By default, CiteRight generates non-linked PDFs of your BOA. However, you have the option to add links to your tab markers! If you choose this setting, you will generate a few different PDFs that allow the tab markers on your citations to link directly to the Book of Authorities.

Check the Hyperlink to BOA box in the Book of Authorities Preferences menu

Select the option to have hyperlinked tab markers

Go to Preferences, then to Book of Authorities, and select the option to Hyperlink to BOA. This option will turn the tab numbering to your BOA into hyperlinks to the specific spot where that reference appears in your BOA once the PDF is generated. In addition, you will generate a combined PDF with those same links all in one document, creating one easy-to-navigate PDF.

Naming the BOA

There are 3 name fields for the BOA, each serves a different purpose.

Long Name is listed in the first reference of your document once a BOA is generated, as mention in a previous article, it defaults to "Book of Authorities".
Short Name is the name that appears in square brackets after the long name in the first reference and is then used in subsequent references.
File Name is used to name the file of the BOA that is generated, as well as the Zip folder name by default. If you need to change the file name of the BOA, you can do so here. This is because the file name serves as the "target links" for the cross-document link between your document and the corresponding BOA.

Make sure to name your BOA in a way that you'll eventually save it.

Once you have saved the preferences you've selected, go to the BoA button and click Generate.

After you generate the BOA, CiteRight will prompt you to save a zip file. Finally, in order to view and move between the PDFs, you'll need to extract the zip file contents.

Unlike generating a standard Book of Authorities (BOA), generating a hyperlinked BOA produces multiple files. These include:

1) The BOA that corresponds to that document (Book Of Authorities)

2) A printout of the document you are working on (Factum)

3) A PDF combining your working document and BOA (Factum-Book of Authorities)

Separate Factum and Book of Authorities files

When using the separate PDFs, hyperlinks are created between BOA and the references as they are cited in the document. This is called a cross-document link.

For example, if you cited paragraph 2 of a case, clicking its reference link in the hyperlinked PDF document will take you directly to that paragraph in your BOA.

If you would like the contents of the Word document and BOA all in one PDF, then simply use this combined PDF file.

In the Combined Factum and BOA, a bookmark is created for your Factum and all the links are internal to the document. This PDF is ready to be uploaded directly to Caselines or simply for review!
